How to Get Your Co-workers Respect When Youve Been There a Long Time - The Muse
How to Get Your Co-workers Respect When Youve Been There a Long Time - The MuseHow to Get Your Co-workers Respect When Youve Been There a Long Time According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average length of time a Millennial stays in a job is about half the national average of the typical tenure. But what if you dont move on? What if you really like your company? Thats awesome (and rare). However, as youve probably noticed, staying in the same place for a long time can make it easier for people to take you for granted. And that leaves you in a strange place where youre constantly struggling to prove yourself to your colleagues. So, if youre being overlooked for new opportunities because the higher-ups dont see how your skills have evolved, if colleagues ask you questions assuming youre still in your entry-level role, or if people just dont seem register what you do, here are six steps for getting the respect youve earned and rightfully deserve.1. Determine Your Unique Value to Your CompanyIts hard to see our unique qualifications from the inside. Were way too close to our own experience to determine our value. So, here are a few questions to help you figure it out Why is what you bring to your job, company, or office relevant to your workplace? Or, to put it another way What problem are you solving? What makes you different or unique? What would the people you work with say is the value of your presence? Being able to answer unterstellung questions will help you realize your own value. And from there, you can move onto the next step.2. Own Your ValueRespect your position and respect how you do your job every single day. When you start to treat your job like it matters, others will notice and follow suit. (And this isnt just for your benefit According to a 2013 study on relationships, your self-esteem impacts those around you.) Take it a step further and be willing to ask yourself What else could I be doing? What skills should I develop to take myself to the next level? Approach management for feedback, then listen and absorb it. The more respect you give to your position, the more respect others will give it. 3. Communicate Your Value to Your ManagerAccording to HR expert Josh Bersin, theres a shift happening now in wertzuwachs reviews, with many companies changing how they evaluate employees. Long story short, managers cant be expected to quantify a years worth of work in a single meeting anymore. So, whether or not your company still conducts annual reviews, its incumbent upon you to communicate your value and keep your manager up-to-date on your work. Set up a meeting where you can discuss how often he or she would like updates from you. Then make sure to follow through and send regular recaps on the projects youre working on. Include your colleagues contributions, note when youve mastered a new skill, and keep him or her in the loop on any new work youre tackling.4. Compliment Your ColleaguesThe easiest way to get respect is to give it, yet so few people do this. So you can really set yourself apart by praising your co-workers publicly. Whenever youre collaborating, be vocal about sharing the credit. This is a good reminder that you dont always have to expressly convey your value as much as you need to just be a valuable colleague. Bonus Offering up compliments has actually been shown to improve the performance of the colleague you complimented. 5. Show Youre Capable of Nurturing TalentWeve heard it before Competition is dead. Collaboration is in. A study out of Washington University in St. Louis found that creativity among women is actually squelched in more competitive- as opposed to collaborative- environments. One of the best ways to nurture those around you is to bring out the best in them. Loop a less- experienced colleague in on a project thatll enhance his or her skill set, or take the time to teach an intern how to use the companys reporting system. These small moments send a powerful message abo ut your confidence level. You dont need to resort to undercutting or one-upping your colleagues in order to make yourself look good. By just collaborating, you show that you believe you have useful experience to share. 6. Learn How to Say NoYes, you can still print out presentations materials for the team before a meeting or bestattungs coffee for a co-worker stuck at his desk- doing the menial stuff shouldnt be beneath you. But, be prepared to remind people where you are now. One way to do that is to start saying no (politely) to those entry-level requests- especially if theres someone else whos job it is to complete those tasks.Still getting questions based about the position you did three years ago? The best way to deal with this is to set people on the right track without sacrificing your own productivity. If its not your job anymore, you simply have to say, I havent been in that department for a couple years, but you might try so-and-so. When youve been somewhere so long, peopl e can start to overlook you. So, it is up to you to remind them of your worth. Have you been working for the same company for forever? Which one of these will you try to do more often? Tweet your answer to me.Photo of frustrated man courtesy of Shutterstock.

9 Phrases Successful People Say Every Day (and You Should, Too)
9 Phrases Successful People Say Every Day (and You Should, Too)9 Phrases Successful People Say Every Day (and You Should, Too)Accomplishments are based on actions, not on thoughts- yet the thought is always father to the deed.Achievement starts with an idea, a perspective, a point of view, or even just an attitude. Here are some of the things extraordinarily successful people say every day- and how those statements spur them to take actions that lead to greater success1. No one else is willing to do that...so thats what I will do.Often, the easiest way to be different is to do what other people are unwilling to do.plektron one thing other people wont do. It can be simple. It can be small. Doesnt matter. Whatever it is, do it.Instantly, youll be a little different from the rest of the pack. Then keep going. Every day, think of one thing to do that no one else is willing to do.After a week, youll be uncommon. After a month, youll be special. After a year, youll be incredible...and you de finitely wont be like anyone else. (And, in the process, you will develop remarkable mental toughness.)2. Wow. That wasnt so bad after all.The most paralyzing fear is fear of the unknown. (At least it is for me.)Yet nothing ever turns out to be as hard or as scary as we think. Plus, its incredibly exciting to overcome a fear. You get that, I cant believe I just did that rush, a thrill you may not have experienced for a long time.Every day do something a little scary, whether physically or emotionally. (If you need a quick boost of confidence to get you going, here are some really simple tricks to use.)Then, trust that you will figure out how to overcome any problems that arise.Because you will.3. I cant do everything today...but I can take one small step. You have plans. You have goals. You have ideas.Who cares? You have nothing until you actually do something.Every day we let hesitation and uncertainty stop us from acting on our ideas. plektrum one plan, one goal, or one idea. And g et started. Just take one small step. The first step is by far the hardest. Every successive step will be a lot easier.4. I should just be quiet.I used to talk a lot. I thought I was insightful and clever and witty and, well, a real hoot.Occasionally, very occasionally, I might even have been one of those things. Most of the time I was not.Truly confident people dont feel the need to talk. While I hate when it happens, I still sometimes realize Im not talking because the other person is interested in what I have to say but because Im interested in what I have to say. (Ick.)Never speak just to please yourself. When you do, you please no one. (And, unlike these folks, you wont be particularly likable.)5. I dont care what other people think. Most of the time, we should worry about what other people think- but not if it stands in the way of living the lives we really want to live.If you really want to start a business- which you can do in just a few hours, mind you- but youre worried that people might say youre crazy, do it anyway. Pick one thing you havent tried because youre concerned about what other people think or say, and just go do it.Its your life. Live it your way.6. Ill show you.Im ashamed to admit it, but one of the best ways to motivate me is to insult me- or for me to manufacture a way to feel insulted, regardless of whether Im actually justified in feeling that way or not.Justified is not the point fueling my motivation to do whatever it takes to prove that person wrong, and, more importantly, achieve what I want to achieve is all that matters.Call it artificial competition or manufactured anger call it childish and immature call it creating perceived insults...but it works for me. (Hey, it worked for Michael Jordan.)And it can work for you.7. Its not perfect...and Im OK with that.Yes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Yes, perfection is the only acceptable outcome.Unfortunately, no product or service is ever perfect, and no project or initiative is perfectly planned. Work hard, do great work, and let it go. Your customers will tell you what needs to be improved, and that means youll get to make improvements that actually matter to people. You cant accomplish anything until you let go. Do your best, let go...and then trust that youll work hard to overcome any shortcomings.8. I should have done better.Weve all screwed up. We all have things we could have done better. Words. Actions. Omissions. Failing to step up, step in, or be supportive.Successful people dont expect to be perfect, but they do think they can always be better. So think back on your day. Think about what went well. Then think about what didnt go as well as it could have and take ownership. Take responsibility. And promise yourself that tomorrow you will do a lot better.9. Thats OK. Ill just outwork them.Like Jimmy Spithill, skipper of Americas Cup-winning Team Oracle USA, says, Rarely have I seen a situation where doing less than the other guy is a go od strategy. You may not be as experienced, as well funded, as well connected, as talented...but you can always out think, out hustle, and out work everyone else. (Or, as I like to say, the extra mile is a vast, unpopulated wasteland.)Even when everything else seems stacked against you, effort and persistence can still be your competitive advantages- and they may be the only advantages you truly need.More From Inc.How to Form Habits That Youll Keep for Life8 Deadly Ways to Kill Employee MotivationHow to Turn Every Failure Into a Measure for SuccessPhoto of speech bubble courtesy of Shutterstock.

Now Is the Time to Plan Your Career Strategy for the New Year
Now Is the Time to Plan Your Career Strategy for the New Year Yes, I hate it, too, when people mention Christmas in November. Letsat least wait until DecemberThat said, its never too early to start thinking about the new year when it comes to your career. In fact, theres never a bad time to be thinking aboutyour career.Lets be honest Most people invest more time in planning their annual two-week holiday than they do in planning their career. So, before you shoot the messenger and point out that Im contradicting myself, know that now isthe time to plan for your career in the new year and here are two really great reasons why1. Its Time to Reframe Your State of MindRemember Planning your career is notlage a chore. It is all about you Strategizing for your successful future is something you should be extremely excited about As Winston Churchill once said, He who fails to plan is planning to fail. However, I wont deny that because its all about you, it is a little scary. Were all pretty good at giving others advice, but when it comes down to our own futures, we tend to make things more complicated than they need to be. We are all struck by the same thought What if I plan something wrong or do something wrong? The thing is, you actually cant fail. Well, you can fail, but only when you stick your head in the sand and pretend this stuff does not matter. If you go down the wrong path, thats fine. Its a learning curve. You can always correct yourself. So stop making this complicated and just do it Making those wrong turns will get you where you need to beSo, a few questions to ask yourself as you begin planning What do you want? Which company do you want to work for? What salary are you looking for?Do you have the relevant experience and qualifications to earn it?If youre stuck on some of these questions, you may just need a little more guidance and someone to point you in the right direction. A career coach might bea great investment when youre thinking about your long-term choices2.Schedule Your Future or It May Never HappenMost people like the idea of planning a successful future, but when it actually comes down to finding the time to do it well, thats quite another thing The only way to plan properly is to schedule some time into your busy dayto ensure that it actually happens.Yes, I know I might be stating the obvious, but guess what? Most people talk a good talk but never get around to actually taking any action. If you keep thinking about something and never get around to doing it, that something will weigh on your mind. It willalways be there just as youre trying to get to sleep at night sitting somewhere in your subconscious and eating away at you. So, instead, just schedule it in and make it happen. If youre not too sure where to start, or it all feels rather overwhelming, just break your planning down into bite-sized chunks. Its better to do something even if its something small than it is to do nothin g at all. Once you start, it gets easier. Youll be able to get some momentum going and work your planning sessions regularly into your daily routine. So, schedule some time into your calendar right now, because it may never happen otherwiseTo SummarizeIf you desperately want to get a new job, now is the perfect time to plan out what you need to do and the things that you need to consider. In addition toaddressing the questions I posedabove, you may want to revamp your resume and spruce up your LinkedIn profile. Just remember that the higher the salary youre looking for and the more senior the job, the better these documents need to be if you wantto differentiate yourself from the competition. If you are aiming for these more senior positions, it is better not togo it alone. While youre trying to figure out what works through trial and error, great opportunities could be passing you by. Many people dont realize they are suffering from what I call CV shame. Check out the video below to l earn moreOn a final note, planning can be fun to do. It doesnt all need to be hard workMany of you will know that I recently moved from London to Spain. Every morning, I like to set up career strategy sessions at my local cafe. As you can see, its a beautiful place to workIregularly spend time charting out the things I need to make happen (both personally and professionally). Itis not something that can be completed annually or every once in a while. I revisit my strategy regularly totweak and amend where necessary.
